Dear David
I have come across news reports on the Cathay Pacific Airway's case whereby their application for the licence to fly the Hong Kong/London/Hong Kong route has been turned down in favour of that of the British Caledonian Airways. I and members of the Chinese Executives Club were shocked at this news in that we feel that the British Government is most unfair to Cathay Pacific, being a Hong Kong Company, and more so discriminating the interest of Hong Kong as a whole.
The Chinese Executives Club operates under the auspices of the Hong Kong Management Association, and members of the Club are restricted only to members of the Association who are owners or senior managers of a commercial or industrial undertaking and educationists who are directly involved in educational work of management. The Club came into being in August, 1976 with 36 members. Today, some three and a half years later, the membership has risen to 320 and is still growing. This may not be a significant figure, but members do cover a cross section of the commercial and industrial circles of Hong Kong. The Club is geared to serve the Chinese community of Hong Kong's commercial and industrial world; therefore, the medium of communication of the Club is Chinese.
In the matter of deep concern this time, we wish to make known to Government our views. The fact that only British Airways have been granted a licence to operate the London/Hong Kong/London route for more than three decades is already a total monopoly of trade. To many Chinese in Hong Kong, this is not a riddle but a mystery, although the only explanation to us Chinese is colonialism. While colonialism today is out of fashion, the act to deny a well established and most competent Hong Kong Company such as Cathay Pacific in favour of yet another British Company is in essence another clear show of colonialism at large.
