MEETING WITH MR DEREK MARCH, SENIOR BRITISH TRADE COMMISSIONER

BRITISH CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY AND HONG KONG PUBLIC HOUSING PROGRAMME

1. Mr March met the Export Group for the Constructional Industries

on 13 October to discuss the opportunities for them in building

public housing in Hong Kong. Mr March has since written to the

Group suggesting that the Secretary for Housing might come over to

talk to them in January 1981. DOT say the Group's response, so far

only verbal, is lukewarm. They are already represented in ong Kong

and do not believe they can compete profitably with local contractors.

REPLACEMENT AIRPORT FOR KAI TAK

2. A decision on whether to proceed with the replacement airport

needs to be taken before the end of 1982. One of the major contracts

to be awarded before then is the new airport master plan consultancy. Groups from the UK, USA, Holland, Germany, Japan and France have been

invited to tender. The details of the British group are in DOT

telegram number CREDA 231 attached.

OTHER MAJOR PROJECTS

3. The two other major projects coming up in the near future are

the Island Northern line, a decision on which will be announced this

month, and the bridges to North Lantao.
