Thank you for your letter of 24 March.

This is primarily a matter for the Hong Kong Government but I can confirm that it has no plans for a second Hong Kong Airport to replace Kai Tak to be situated in the People's Republic of China.

The position is that, some time in the mid-1980s, Kai Tak will have reached the limits of its present capacity. There is little scope for expansion on the present site. A preliminary study in 1974 identified an area at Chek Lap Kok to the north of Lantau Island as the most likely site. A current feasibility study shows that it should be possible to construct a two-runway replacement airport there. However, since further detailed studies are required a final decision cannot be expected before 1983.
