Location of the Bus-Only Lanes in North Point

14

Between Causeway Bay and the junction of Java Road/King's Road, bus-only lanes can be located either along Java and Electric Roads or along King's Road, The Action Group considered that, from the traffic flow viewpoint, locating the bus-only lanes in Java and Electric Roads would have the effect of leaving King's Road available for other traffic, of reducing the extent of right-turning at the junction of Java Road and King's Road and that it might also reduce pedestrian movements across King's Road. This option would also facilitate access to the North Point Bus Terminus, the North Point Fire Station and emergency access to buildings in Java Road and Electric Road.

15

However, the Group concluded that it would be undesirable to divert all of the bus routes presently serving King's Road into Java and Electric Roads. There are now about 170 bus routes operating along King's Road during peak periods compared to 50 operating along Java and Electric Roads. Such a massive diversion of the major passenger carrier away from the centre of activity would be undesirable.

16

Furthermore, China Motor Bus Company (CMB) advised that it would be very reluctant to re-route King's Road services away from the centre of activity in the corridor because it would be less convenient for its passengers. CMB also pointed out that the pavements along Java and Electric Roads are not suited for large passenger queues. The narrower pavements and the absence of the bus canopies that have been provided along King's Road would increase passenger discomfort, especially on hot and rainy days.

17

If bus-only lanes were provided along King's Road, CMB would be prepared to :-

(i)

(ii)

divert to King's Road all of its services presently operating along Java and Electric Roads, thus leaving more space in these roads for other traffic, and

reduce the number of bus stops along King's Road in order to speed bus movement along the reserved lanes,
