Explanatory Note

These regulations increase the fares payable

for hiring taxis and at the same time make the necessary

adjustments for metrication purposes. The new fares

are

(a) $4.00 for the first 2 kilometres and 50 cents

for every kilometre thereafter for Hong Kong

and Kowloon taxis; and

(b)

$2.40 for the first 2 kilometres and 30 cents

for every kilometre thereafter for New

Territories taxis.

The charges for waiting time will be in respect

of every 2 minutes or part thereof. The previous charges were in respect of every 22 minutes or part thereof. As

a result, there is an increase in these charges.

Regulation 3 makes transitional provisions to

enable taxis to charge in accordance with the new fares

until such time as their taximeters have been converted

to record them.
