During the month, 2862 ethnic Chinese originating in Vietnam
who had left and settled in China, subsequently making their way to Hong Kong,
were returned to China by arrangement with the Chinese authorities and with
the knowledge of UNHCR. About one-half were sent back in two trains. The
whole operation was a difficult and sensitive one, which would have been
aggravated had the refugees resisted return. This still leaves some 2,200
such persons in Hong Kong. The Chinese reported that they had recently
stopped two more boatloads from sailing to Hong Kong.
