The Macau
34.
The pattern of the arrival of Vietnamese settled in China was much the same as in May, though the number was nearly twice as high. authorities claim to be unable to accept any further refugees and the latter are therefore sent on to Hong Kong either in their own boats or others taken over by the Macau Police for the purpose. Following representations to the NCNA, the Chinese authorities appear to have taken firm counter-measures in the Ping Sha Farm area of Doumen County, west of Macau, but this has only prompted the Vietnamese to seek other departure points in the area. Vietnamese-Chinese fishermen settled in communes in the Bei Hai areas of
Guangxi are also joining the flow towards Hong Kong. The exodus has been stimulated by rumours that some western countries are sending ships to Hong Kong to take off refugees and by international radio broadcasts that Hong Kong is accepting refugees. The fact that no Vietnamese-Chinese have been returned to China since January probably strengthens the urge to make for Hong Kong.
