No doubt with a view to maintaining this improvement, the communist

school authorities plan to recruit graduates from the Chinese University of

Hong Kong to teach at the Pui Kiu Middle School and the Elementi Evening

College. It is known that those recruited for the former will have

communist connections. The contemporary nature of at least parts of the communist educational system is borne out by a report that teachers, some

with masters' degrees from American universities, are to be recruited to

teach computer language and computer programming at the communist Heung To

English Evening School.

The Hong Kong Federation of Educational Workers, the major communist

front organisation in the educational field, is not expected to offer any major

public comment on the Government's Green Paper on Education but rather to convey its views through individual sympathisers in neutral education bodies.

In addition to organising sightseeing tours in China for its

members during the holidays, the communist influenced Professional Teachers

Union, in conjunction with the Guangzhou Provincial Education Committee,

arranged for some 30 teachers from the aided and subsidised sector in Hong

Kong to run courses in teaching methods for about 150 English language

teachers in China. This is the first time PTU members have been known to

take part in such a venture.

pro-communist publications which regularly criticise China's leadership and

policies. Circulation of these publications inside China was banned last

year (para 9, September 1979 Report). The NCNA has pointed out that, as it

does not finance the publications, there is little it can do.

Two local communist book companies (the Commercial Press and the

Life Reader Sinzh Joint Publishing Co.) are to exhibit at the forthcoming

London Book Fair. A third such company, Cosmos Book Co., is to open a

subsidiary in Hamburg.
