SECRETARY OF STATE: JIMMY YOUNG PROGRAMME

1.

Lord Carrington is to appear live on the Jimmy

Young Show on Wednesday, 26 November. He will be answering questions submitted by listeners.

2.

I attach questions relevant to your responsibilities,

and should be most grateful if you could arrange for short

draft answers to be prepared.

3.

I am sending copies of this minute, with appropriate attachments, to Mr Hannay and to Heads of relevant

Departments, with the same request.

4.

Since I shall be away with the Secretary of State

in Brussels on 24 and 25 November, I should be grateful if drafts

could reach Mr Westbrook by close of play on Monday evening,

24 November.

5.

The Jimmy Young Show is, of course, a 'popular' programme with a wide, if unsophisticated, audience. Many of the questions will be matters of general policy on which Lord

Carrington will need no briefing, but it is important that he

should not be caught out by being faced with particular

individual concerns.

Hence this minute.
