They forced China to conclude numerous unequal treaties y which they acquired the right to station their land and
sea forces in China and to enjoy consular jurisdiction,
and China has even been divided up into spheres of
influence among a number of imperialist powers.
The imperialists have gained control of all the important trading ports in China by unequal treaties and have
marked off parts of many of these ports as concessions under their direct administration" (Selected Works Volume III, pages 78-79).
20. In 1945, Miao also implied, although he did not specifically refer to it, that the Treaty of Chungking January 1943 represented the abolition of Britain's unequal treaties with China. In "Cn Coalition Government" (Mao's
political report to the 7th National Congress of the CCP in April 1945) he stated:
"The Chinese people welcome the fact that many foreign governments have renounced the unequal treaties and concluded new, equal treaties with China. We believe, however, that the conclusion of equal treaties does not
mean that China has actually won genuine equality. The Chinese people can never depend solely on the favour of foreign governments for such actual and genuine equality, but should win it chiefly through their own efforts efforts aimed at building China into a new democratic State politically, economically and culturally, otherwise independence and equality will be only apparent and not real" (Selected Works Volune IV page 303).
