Visit to Shanghai Docks

The Financial Secretary and Political Adviser visited Shanghai docks on 9 May 1980. They were taken

This could cope with one was reserved for containers.

One went

2,000 containers per month. There were three regular lines operating from Shanghai. with containers. two times per month to Japan; another at a similar rate to Australia; and yet another to Hong Kong as a feeder service. It could cope with containers of 40 feet length. There were no special container handling facilities as yet. It was necessary to use ordinary cranes. During 1979 the total throughput of containers had been 15,000. The maximum capacity of the phase I development was 3,000 pieces per month both inward and

outward.
