DISCUSSIONS WITH THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT ON THE LEASE

1.

There have been no discussions of the New Territories Lease

as such, but the subject of Hong Kong's future was touched upon

during the visit to London of Premier Hua Guofeng in November

last year.

My right honourable Friend the Prime Minister

indicated in her reply of 4 December 1979 to the honourable

Member for Liverpool, Scotland Exchange, that we had agreed

with the Chinese Government that we shared an interest in

maintaining the stability and prosperity of the territory

and that we agreed to keep in contact on the subject.

OF SOVEREIGNTY OVER HONG KONG

No such discussions have been held.

HMG'S COMMITMENT TO HONG KONG

3. There is of course no question of any change in HMG's

commitment to their responsibilities to Hong Kong and its

people.
