I am very sorry that I was unable to meet you

in Hong Kong on 27 September as planned. As you will

have heard, events in the Middle East forced me to

return to London: it was a great disappointment to

have to postpone a tour to which I had been looking forward for so long.

I was, of course, informed of your discussions

with the Prime Minister, Ian Gilmour and Keith Joseph

on the Guangdong nuclear project. I discussed the

project briefly with the Chinese Foreign Minister when

Huang Hua passed through London on 1 October. We will

now try to get a clearer picture of the Chinese

position. Murray MacLehose will of course be keeping

me informed.

It was good of you to go to the trouble of

arranging a picnic lunch and presentation on Guangdong

and I am delighted that, although I could not be there, Princess Alexandra and Mr Angus Ogilvy were able to benefit from your thoughtfulness.
