SENIOR STAFF APPOINTMENTS: ESSENTIAL FACTS
1. Sir Murray MacLehose was appointed Governor and Commander-in-
Chief of Hong Kong in November 1971, initially for five years. The
present extension of his term of office, i.e. until April 1982, is
the fifth to be agreed.
2.
Thought will shortly have to be given as to who should succeed
Sir Murray and it will be useful to have his own views on the sort
of person needed for the job. There may not be another early
opportunity of consulting him.
3. As regards other senior appointments, Ministers have agreed that
Sir Philip Haddon-Cave, presently Financial Secretary, should succeed
Sir Jack Cater as Chief Secretary in August 1981. Sir Jack will
become the Hong Kong Commissioner in London.
