be combined with a visit to Chengde
or a stopover in Urumqi or Kunming.

Cultural evening
15.
The Chinese will wish at some stage of their programme
to take Lord and Lady Carrington to a 'cultural evening'
(Chinese opera, ballet, gymnastics, concert, etc). It would
be helpful to know if they have any general preferences.
PROGRAMME FOR LADY CARRINGTON
16.
It would also be helpful to have some general advice on Lady Carrington's interests. In Hong Kong she might wish
to visit a hospital, school or public housing while Lord
Carrington is visiting the Garrison (there may be an opportunity
for her to perform an opening ceremony at one of these
institutions). During the Tokyo part of the visit to Japan
she might spend one day in Tokyo itself, visiting perhaps
the Palace and Palace grounds, the Meiji Shrine and shopping;
and the other on a day trip to Kamakura (another former capital
with several temples on the coast) or Hakone (a scenic upland
area and lake). In China there will be no need for a
separate programme outside Peking. In Peking the options would include additional sightseeing (see paragraph 13 above) or visits to any institutions (university, school, hospital, commune, factory, arts and crafts centre) in which she had a
