Trade, Industry and Customs Department;
A visit to CDO/District Officers to see local administration in action;
(m) Call on HQBF;
I have omitted some of the more obvious calls which I imagine will be included as in any programme drawn up for an FCO visitor.
3. On the social side, Ian Orr has asked me to keep the evening of 19 June free for a dinner which he would like to give. Lydia has kindly said to Patrick Williamson that she would like to me dinner during my visit and Patrick is writing to her about this Georges Egal, the newly arrived French Consul-General, has said would like to offer me lunch or dinner and I promised that I let him know through you the dates I would be in Hong Kong
4. I apologise for addressing this barrage at you but Ian Orr thought that you would be the best person to approach although no doubt someone else in the Hong Kong Government will actually coordinate the visit. I shall of course be happy to fit in with any local suggestions as I want to see as much of the Hong Kong Government as possible. If there is an opportunity to meet the during the course of routine business, I would certainly veles but I doubt that you would want to arrange a specific call. very much like to visit Macao and if anyone from the Hong Kong Government were making an official visit there I would be delighted to accompany him. Alternatively, I could do it privately on one of the two weekends I am in Hong Kong.
5. In case there is any time for recreation, I shall bring my tennis racquet but I am only a very average club player.
6: A number of people have suggested that I look up friends, contacts, etc whilst I am in Hong Kong but I shall not burden you with these and will try to make arrangements to see them once I am in Hong Kong and can see what gaps there are in the progra In any case, I imagine the last two or three days of my visit will be left open in order to take care of any calls or visits that come up I am following the earlier part of the programme.
7. Finally, as regards hotel bookings, I enclose a letter to the Manager of the Lee Gardens Hotel. There is an obvious advantag to me in staying there but if you consider it inconvenient or there is no room, I would opt for the Hong Kong Hotel and ask that a Government booking be made on my behalf. I should be grateful, however, if someone could arrange for the enclosed letter to be delivered with any necessary local endorsement.
