CONFIDENT!
Mr Audsley added that the improvement in UK/
Hong Kong trade relations over the last twelve months had been greater than in the last twelve years.
He was
confident that the spur of trade with China would accelerate this and made it all the more important for closer understanding between UK and Hong Kong businessmen.

The Governor drew the members' attention to the multiplier effect built into trade with Hong Kong by virtue of its being a shop window not only for the Chinese, but also for the tourists and businessmen who pass through on their travels in South East Asia. For this reason it was crucially important that Britain put up a creditable and very visible performance in Hong Kong. On the question of labour relations he felt that the next few years would see a considerable change in the contribution of left wing trade unions in Hong Kong. In the spirit of UK/China co-operation they were almost bound to move towards a joint approach with management towards the improvement of worker conditions and this was all to the good.

After an exchange of courtesies the meeting closed.
