BRIEF 3 PART III

ALLIED TEXTILES COMPANIES LTD (MR WILSON)

1

The Group is the sixth largest in the UK wool textile industry, comprising in all some 30 companies employing around 2,145 people. The Group is engaged in the manufacturing,

processing and distribution of textile products.

2

A number of group projects involving rationalisation, re-organisation and plant replacement have taken place under the Wool Textile Scheme. Investment of £5.4m has been undertaken,

attracting scheme grants of £1.2m.

3

The development of new ranges for export has been a particularly important feature over the past several years, which resulted in increased exports from £6 million in 1976 to £13.6 million in 1978. However, the past year brought a check to this trend due to the combined effects of disturbed conditions in the Middle East, a world- wide downturn in demand.& the strength of sterling. Exports fell to £8.7m in the year ended September 1979. In 1978 a subsidiary company (HF Hartley) won a £9m order for civilian and military cloths in the Middle East against strong competition from Japan, the USA, France and Italy. This is believed to be the largest order ever secured by the UK wool textile industry.

4

Group policy is to guide Group trading activity towards quality and profitability of business rather than encourage manufacturing activity at decreased selling prices. This strategy has resulted in increased profit of £2.9m in 1979 (£2.7m in 1978) against decreased turnover of £30.6m (£34.4m in 1978).

5

The Chairman of the Group, JE Lumb, was awarded a CBE in

the 1979 New Year Honours List.
