BRIEF 2

4 Success of British companies in securing major projects business, notably the Mass Transit Railway is very encouraging

and an indicator of UK firms' resolve to succeed in this market.

BACKGROUND POINTS

1 UK's share of the market has declined from 10% to 5% of the

total in recent years. It has recovered most recently, however, from 4.7% to 5.1%.

2 As well as Japan and Korea, W Germany, France and Italy have been expanding their share despite the handicap of distance.

4 Recent history of bilateral textile affairs (see Brief 3 part IV).

POINTS TO MAKE

1 Hong Kong has been particularly well organised and honest in implementing her side of the bilateral agreement.

2 Pleased to note energetic action by Hong Kong authorities on origin fraud.

3 The present arrangements provide for continued growth of Hong Kong's exports and assure her position as our largest single supplier of textiles.

5

Future of the MFA.

POINTS TO MAKE

1 The UK fully supports the present MFA and the bilateral agree- ments and expects the provisions to be implemented fairly by all parties.

2

Given the difficulties faced by our industry, we shall have no alternative but to press for continued management of textile imports
