My Quantrill 2241/2
I see no
objection.
He has asked
Adrian Swire will be Chairman of the General Council of British Shipping this year. me to be the principal speaker at the Council's Annual Dinner on November 5th. I have agreed in principle, subject of course to FCO concurrence. It is Adrian's idea that his and my speech should have a Far Eastern theme, and it would be a good audience to address on the changing economic role of Far Eastern countries which has affected shipping interests like everything else.
If you agree I would arrive in London on either November 2nd or 3rd, and leave again as soon after the 5th as any other business permitted, but in any event by the end of that week so that my total absence from Hong Kong would not be more than a week.
If you see any objection perhaps you would let me have a reply by telegram otherwise a letter would be quite good enough.

Perhaps at the same time I should mention that we have been looking at the leave schedule for the year, and I hope to take leave from July 11 - August 11. Since this would coincide with the closing weeks of the Parliamentary session, it would not be a good time to get hold of Ministers or MPs and this would make the short November visit an added convenience.
