DEPARTMENTAL INVOLVEMENT

1. The Department has been closely involved with the Hong Kong Government, mainly through the TCC and E Divisions. Department staff has worked in Hong Kong on

the following projects:-

West Kowloon Computer Braffic Control System

This involved three officers: one for design and implementation; one for management of the system (for about four years); and a third for an evaluation exercise (3 months).

b) Compre..onsive Traffic Surveillance and Control Study

For this study (report nearly complete) of the surveillance and control network, two officers were loaned to Maunsell Consultants for 10 months. They study also involved short visits in 1970 by other specialist staff concerned with date transmission and road signs, together with visits by a senior officer to chair

Steering Group meetings.

Island Corridor Light Rail Study

An officer was loaned to Martin & Voorhees to work for 6 months on the traffic management aspects of this study into the feasibility of upgrading the tramway system on Hong Kong Island.

d. Road Safety

Assistance has been given by the Department to the Hong Kong Government in deciding on their approach to the serious road accident problem, The Department has been asked to assist in filling key posts in a Road Safety Division to be

set up soon.

Bus Priorities

Sir Peter Baldwin was approached during his recent visit to Hong Kong by the Secretary for the Environment with a request for a specialist from the Department to work as Transport Priorities Advisor in to the Commissioner of Transport's office. There have been further discussions on this with the Commissioner and

details of a secondment are now being worked out.

f. Hong Kong Kowloon Link

The study of new links between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon is being carried out jointly by Hott, Hay and Anderson (UK) and Wilbur Smith and Assoc (USA). A specialist from the Department is at present seconded to the consultant's team.
