Kowloon Canton Railway (KCR). Operated by government on the 34 km between Kowloon and the border where it connects with the Chinese railway system, Until recently passengers have had to change trains at the border (although freight has travelled direct) but through trains were introduced this year. Double tracking and electrification of the railway is proceeding.

13. Mass Transit Railway Corporation. The Corporation, which is fully owned by government, started work on the 16 km Modified Initial System in 1975. The first section opened in October and the remainder early in 1980. An extension to Tsun Wan is due to open in late 1982.

Airports

14. Hong Kong Airport is regularly used by 30 airlines and dealt with nearly 6m passengers and 230,000 tonnes of freight in 1978. Investigations are proceeding into the feasibility of building a new airport at Lantao Island.
