Buses
There are two major bus companies, both privately owned, which between
them carry nearly 3m passengers daily.
The Hong Kong Government is under continuous criticism regarding the service
they provide (both rake a profit). To improve the situation an agreement
has been concluded which includes a large bus purchasing programme by the
companies (from which UK firms hope to benefit), approval to substantial fare
increases and an undertaking; from Government to institute bus priority measures
aimed at achieving a minimum 10 mph journey time for buses.
During Sir Peter Baldwin's recent visit, the Secretary for the Environment
asked him whether the Department could provide a specialist to work in the
Commissioner for Transport's Office as Transport Priorities Advisor.
There has been further discussions on this with the Commissioner for Transport
and the details of a secondment are now being worked out.
