the plan.
Tuen Mun Light Railway
The Government has asked the Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company Ltd (which owns Hong Kong Tramways Ltd) to build and operate a 25 km tran network based on the new town of Tuen Mun in the extreme west of the New Territories. A 17 km system would be built initially with an 8 km extension to Yuan Long following later. The first stage is to be completed by 1983.
The consultancy contract for the project has been awarded to Electrowatt of Switzerland. Met Cam have been leading a UK consortium in pursuit of a turnkey contract for the project, but it now appears that separate contracts for vehicles, trackwork and power supply will be let. Total cost of the project has been estimated at US $100 million but the potential net return to the UK is uncertain at this stage. Tenders are expected to be issued in May 1980, with the
contract awards by the end of the year.
Present Situation
TUNNELS AND CROSS-HARBOUR LINKS
At present Hong Kong is served by two ferry companies which between them carry more than half a million passengers daily. The larger (Hong Kong and Yaumati Ferry Co) extends its service to cover the outlying district and islands, and in 1978 opened a hoverferry service between Hong Kong and Whampoa (near Canton).
Hong Kong has two road tummels, one between Kowloon and the New Territories, the Lion Rock Tunnel, which was opened in 1967 and collected HK 9m in 1978 alone: growth in traffic has averaged 25 per cent per annum over the last three years and one cross-harbour tunnel which operates at capacity for certain parts of the day. The Cross Harbour Tunnel was opened in 1972 and cost HK £320m. In 1978 HK $167.2m was collected from 27.3 million vehicles.
