HONG KONG

STEERING BRIEF RAILWAYS

The British Trade Commission in Hong Kong is keeping the Department of Trade fully informed of developments but it would be useful to know more about the Hong Kong Government's latest thinking on the following two projects:

2.

Island Corridor Extension: nature of the system. The choice is between a heavy underground mass transit system of the type already in use, or a light rail transit (IRT) system for which UK consultants (Martin and Vorhees) have put up proposals.

the timing of this project and the

The former would be the preferred solution for Metro-Cammell (rolling stock). If LRT, Metro- Cammell would also hope to bid in co-operation with a German firm.

Tuen Mun (light railway network): work on the first stage

(17 kms) is expected to begin in 1981 and be completed in 1983. The Minister could ask if this programme still stands and when tenders are likely to be awarded. Metro-Cammell heads a UK team

which incldes GEC, Balfour-Beatty, Westinghouse and Brush Electrical in bidding for a turnkey contract.

The above matters might be raised at the working dinner with the Governor and officials (6 April) and discussed in more detail

at the meeting with senior officials on transport planning (14 April).

The Minister will meet the Deputy General Manager at the Governor's dinner (6 April). Modernisation on the Hong Kong side (35 kms) is in progress and due to be completed in 1982. UK firms are deeply involved.

This £500m project was formally opened last month by Princess Alexandre. British firms were much involved Metro Cammell (rolling stock), GEC (power supply), Westinghouse (signalling), Henry Boot (track).

For both of the above, Mr Fowler will wish to enquire about progress and any possible problems affecting the UK firms involved.
