DHIEF ON TRAFFIC SURVEILLANCE AND CONTROL

Summary

In 1977 the Hong Kong Government appointed Mansells, assisted by the Department, to recommend the future surveillance and control requirements for its 126 km high grade road network (about half of which is constructed). The report due to be formally submitted soon will recommend a comprehensive system estimated at £7m, and the British firms of GBC and Plessey are well qualified for the work. The proposals are supported in principle by the Government and after endorsement by the Transport Policy Committee the scheme will be put into the Public Works Programme. It is essential that the Department stays closely involved to ensure the adoption of UK standards and tech- niques. Informal approaches have already been made by the Public Works Department for assistance in the preparation of detailed specifications.

Line to Take

The Department, through the Overseas Unit, is keeping a close watch on developments. If the opportunity arises it would be useful to underline British expertise in this

field,
