BRIEP ON MASS TRANSIT RAILWAY
CUMCCARY
The first stage 15.6 km Initial System of the MTR (total cost some 27001) was
formally opened by Princess Alexandra on the 12 February. The fact that this
project was brought in within budget and ahead of programme is seen locally as an
immense achievement particularly since part of this system opened in October 1979
is getting higher than predicted ridership. A 10.7 km extension to Tsuen Wan is now
nder construction and due for completion in 1932. UK fims have secured a substantial
share of the MTR contracts.
2. Currently there is strong debate on whether the MTR should be extended along
the north shore of Hong Kong Island as an alte mative to the Light Rail System at present being studied (this is discussed in the BRIEF ON LIGHT RAIL TRANSPORT SYSTEI).
LINE TO TAKE
It would be useful to know more about Hong Kong Government's thinking on the Hong Hong Island proposals.
