Macau has seen a good development in all aspects since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal a year

Macau also experienced the most rapid economic growth during the same period. China's 4-modernization programme will benefit Macau.

ago.

To maintain the stability of Macau not only benefits both the peoples of China and Portugal, but also does a lot of good to the broad masses of the people of Macau. Therefore, it is not believed that the broad masses of the people of Macau will agree with the drafters of the proposed constitution in their attempt to make a reform which is detrimental to be economic development of Macau. What a Portuguese has once rem rked is correct. He said when China and Portugal set up

diplomatic relations, it went without saying that both sides would agree

to maintain the status quo of Macau. It was also agreed that before any

consultations between both sides no members of the Legislation Assembly

of Macau would be allowed by either side to make a reform of the

political system like what some of the members are doing. People are

convinced that the Chinese Government would not want to see an unstable

Macau. The Chinese Government would not allow any of the members of the

Legislative Assembly to carry out any activities for autonomy. Nor

#

would it tolerate any struggles brought to Macau by any political parties

of Portugal. The Legislative Assembly is expected to vote on the proposed

constitution soon. It is hoped that those broad-minded members of the

Legislative Assembly will respect history and look reality in the face

before making a wise choice.
