at the recent sessions in Peking of the Chinese People's Political

Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the National People's Congress

(NPC). Mr Li said that he had spoken in group discussions on Hong Kong.

The Governor asked what he had said. Mr Li said that his message had been

that Hong Kong was a good place but not a paradise. There had been very great development in the past 10 to 12 years; but there was no reasons for people to run away to Hong Kong. He thought that his remarks could have been written by the Governor. The Governor asked if there were people in China hostile to Hong Kong. Mr Li said that he thought not but that many people did not understand Hong Kong properly. He felt

that more now understood it much better.

Speeches

11.

Mr Wang gave a short impromptu speech during which he emphasised the significance of the Governor's visit to Peking in March 1979, the first time a Governor of Hong Kong had made an official visit to the People's Republic of China. He was pleased that relations between Chim Britain and Hong Kong were so good and also between China and Hong Kong.

In reply the Governor thanked Mr Wang for his hospitality and agreed

that relations between the UK and China were excellent. Hong Kong was an

important element in this relationship and relations over Hong Kong were also very good. Mr Wang had contributed greatly to the friendliness and effectiveness of working contacts.
