Dear

Chinese New Year Party

Subsequent to the receipt of your Telex No. 1169 of 9th November, 1979, my Senior Liaison Officer telephoned the Chinese Embassy and spoke to Mr. Lin Lin (林 (*****), the Consul-General, to sound out our inten- tion of inviting officials from the Embassy to come to the above party. We have since had a reply, by telephone, that Mr. Lin and two of his assistants Mr. CHUNG Chien-hua (M) and CHANG Chi-nung (kt) who are presumed to be Third Secretaries, would be delighted to attend.

to

There was a slight delay before the Embassy was contacted. My SLO had planned to speak to Mr. Lin at a function where he anticipated that he might meet him personally to make it as casual as possible. When that meeting failed to take place as neither Mr. Lin nor his assistants failed to appear, the telephone call was made at the end of November.

Mr. Lin was given a brief description of the purpose of the party and was asked to give us names of those officials he thought we should invite, if they were free to attend. It would appear that he was quite sur prised to hear that the party would take place in our Office. He asked repeatedly for the venue as though he wanted to make sure he was not mistaken.

/The reply
