SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN
RU
Your letter of 25 July to Hong Kong and General Department has been passed on to us for reply.
1.
2. We have sought advice from our Legal Adviser on the subject of Pitcairn's involvement with legislation on sanctions against Iran. He agrees with your view that such a policy is rather unnecessary and ineffectual in such a tiny community as Pitcairn and that it can really be ignored. He therefore suggests that you should inform the Island Magistrate of something along the lines of: '... HMG's policy on trade sanctions towards Iran, and that because of the peculiar circumstances of the Island, we do not intend to take specific legislative action in Pitcairn, but that we would wish the Magistrate to draw this policy to the attention of the Island's inhabitants'. In view of the Island's links with the United States, you may like to stress the importance of HMG's policy on trade sanctions.
3. He does mention the possible sale of postage stamps to Iran but, as he says: 'These stamps are mainly sold through the Crown Agents who would be covered by the UK legislation anyway; if these stamps are sold through any other agents, I suggest that we write to them instructing them not to accept any further orders from Iran'
•
We are writing separately to Colin Mulcahy on legislation for Pitcairn generally.
