POINTS TO MAKE (DEFENSIVE)
(212)
1.
We have no doubt as to British sovereignty over the Falkland
Islands and Dependencies.
2.
The Falkland Islands have been settled and administered by
Britain without interruption since 1833. Nearly all the Islanders
are of British extraction and have British passports. Their
Language, way of life and system of Government are British.
Islanders have made clear their wish to remain British. We
recognise and respect that wish.
3.
The
We recognise effect dispute has had on our relations with
Argentina. We have willingly entered discussions with Argentina
to see whether a solution can be found. Mr Ridley held talks
with Comodoro Cavandoli in New York in April. We hope to continue
these exchanges. But any solution must be acceptable to the
Islanders.
4.
A solution would be in all our interests. It would help
unlock the resources of the South West Atlantic to the benefit
all.

5.
We recognise the help which Argentina gives in providing
certain services for the Islands. We regard these as excellent examples of the sort of practical cooperation which we hope can be further developed between Britain, Argentina and the Islands.
