POLICY TOWARDS THE DEPENDENT TERRITORIES

1.

psc.

Many thanks for sending me a copy of your letter of 1 February. I am glad however to see that it is for information only as far as Pitcairn is concerned.

2.

The New Zealanders have a comparable problem in the South Pacific to ours in the Caribbean. I wrote recently to Snodgrass about my visit to the Cook Islands during which it was made quite clear to me that the Cooks valued their links with New Zealand and intended to keep them; and the New Zealanders for their part seem unlikely to precipitate a dissolution. I think the New Zealanders would be interested to see this statement of our policy. Can I pass this on with an appropriate caveat?
