SAMPLE OF DS CANDIDATES FOR HONG KONG OVERSEAS POSTS

No 1:

A Grade 5A officer aged 35. Chinese speaker who has spent 2 years on commercial work in Peking and 2 years with the DOT on China/Hong Kong trade sections. Has not worked in Hong Kong but spent a year there in early 1970s as a language student. He has also spent some time on political duties mainly associated with Far East and China in particular.

No 2:

A Grade 6 officer aged 50. Former member of Trade Commission Service who transferred to the DS in 1966. He served in Hong Kong for 4 years in the late 1970s and is a widely experienced and very capable commercial officer. He has also proved his ability to diversify by performing well on information duties and currently on political work. He will shortly be promoted to Grade 5.

No 3:

A Grade 5E officer aged 46. Again, a former member of the Trade. Commission Service who transferred to the DS in 1970. He served in Hong Kong for 3 years in the early 1970s and is, as expected, with his background, an able and expert trade promoter. He too has proved his ability to diversity on information and political work. His current performance as Head of Chancery has recently earned him accelerated promotion to Grade 5.

No 4:

A Grade 6 officer aged 45. A lifer in the DS having joined aged 17. Widely experienced in all aspects of the work performed by the DS. Since 1970 has specialised in commercial work particularly in developed and complex markets. He has spent 3 years on secondment to BOTB/DOT and 4 years in Hong Kong. He isa competent and capable trade promoter who will shortly earn promotion to Grade 5.
