unofficials representing a wide cross-section of the community. The main work of the Board is to advise the Government on the general well-being of residents in the areas. Public funds are allocated to the Boards to enable them to promote recreational and cultural activities and to undertake minor environmental improvement projects. Since their formation, the District Advisory Boards have made significant progress in promoting cultural activities and in bringing together the traditional inhabitants of the New Territories with the newcomers.

New Development Areas

Despite the size of the current development programmes involving a total expenditure of some $30,580 million, the forecast shows a falling off in land production by the middle of 1980'5. Plans for new development areas are being drawn up so is to provide a continuous supply of land for public housing and associated private developments. These areas include further extensions of existing New Town boundaries at Sha Tin and Tuen Mun as well as new areas at Junk Bay and Lantau Island.
