THE AMOUNT OF BAIL

8. There is no indication that any of the people involved in

the demonstration on 7 January suffered hardship from being

asked to provide bail of HK$200 (about £21). Figures quoted

by the Society for Community Organisation show that the average

family income of the boat dwellers is HK$1,700 per month.

THE SOCIETY FOR COMMUNITY ORGANISATION

9. The Society for Community Organisation was founded in 1971

by the Protestant and Roman Catholic Churches in Hong Kong. It

aims to encourage people to participate in solving their own

community problems. Most of its supporters are students and

social workers etc. It is essentially a responsible

organisation, although it sometimes seems to want to achieve

too much too quickly. There is no reason to doubt the

sincerity of the Society's motives in taking up the cause of

the boat people.
