The statistics on legal immigrants from China refer to those who registered with the Registration of Persons Office in March, April and May 1979, and exclude those under 11 years old who are not required to register.

The following employment statistics should be read with reservation because:

(a)

legal entrants normally register three months after arrival; they might not at that stage have found a job or a school. This has the effect of exaggerating the proportion who are regarded as unemployed (24.9%); and

(b) those claiming to be housewives (14.3%)

might also have found employment after registration.
