Although the request for a visit by the the RN Tank Group visiting Singapore - October is very much marginal to the solution of Hong Kong's real problems, I think we should try to press for it, since it is something that the Govenor has asked for, and it does look as if the group will be at a loose end at the time. I am not me whether it is essential to linh the a Hong Kong visit to the proposed China one - on the face of it I don't see why. And I would have thought Hong Kong should have provit, over a good will visit to the Gulf. I recommend therefore that we should ask Defence Department to press
the MOD to agree to a visit to Hong Kong, whether or not the group also goes to Chima.
