ANGOLAN REFUGEES

ESSENTIAL FACTS

CONFIDENTIAL

The UNHCR estimate that the civil war in Angola in 1975 led to one million Angolans becoming refugees and displaced persons. However, since then the majority have been able to return. In July 1979 the UNHCR launched an appeal for the 50,000 Angolan refugees who had returned from Zaire to the Angolan provinces of Uige and Zaire. The Angolan Government are faced with a need to construct new village settlements to provide initial accommodation for them.
