: Lord Carrington told the international meeting
held under UN auspices at Geneva on 20-21 July, at
the Prime Minister's initiative, that Britain had agreed
to accept for resettlement, as the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees had requested, a
further 10,000 refugees, to be taken from Hong Kong,
in addition to the 4,600 we had already agreed to
accept; and that we proposed to make an additional
£5 million available to help deal with the refugee
problem over the next 12 months.
I am glad to say that, in all, the Geneva meeting
resulted in a massive increase in offers of resettlement
places, from 125, 000 to 260,000, and in new pledges
