REFUGEE RESETTLEMENTATIONAL MIGRATICH

With the movement of 16.100 persons during the month of June, ICE1's movement program for the period 1 January - 30 June 1979 totaled 30,300.. This number includes

1 Inlochinese refugees, refugee migrants ex-Eastern Europe principally the Soviet Union, refugees ex-Latin America, non-European refugees other than Indochinese and European nationals.

Since 1 January 1979 a total of 25,500 refugee migrants from the Soviet Union have arrived in Austria and Italy. During the same period. same 24.000 such refugee migrants departed under ICE auspices 8,750 to Israel, 14,250 to the United States, 550 to Canada and 450 to Australia.

SELECTIVE MIGRATION TO LATIN AMERICA

The transfer of technology through selective migration continues to be an impor- The immigrants tant service providal by ICE to its Latin American member countries. moval under ICH's Selective Migration Programmes are in a position to meet immediate ncols in various sectors of the cconomies of the Latin Aerican countries and to make contributions through their skills, experience and technical know-how. Among the cases moved during June were an Italian mining engineer to Ecuador to fill an impor tant teaching position as petroleum and natural gas expert with the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral, an Italian university graduate in agrarian sciences to Homluras to fill a teaching rosition at the Instituto Nacional de Formación Profe sional, and a German mechanical engineer to Frazil to fill an important management position in an aluminium plant. Since this Selective Program was initiated in 1964, about 27.000 skilled, highly skilled and professional migrants have been moved to Latin America for permanent resettlement.

NEW LEADERSHIP FOR ICE'S LATIN AFRICAN PROGRAMES

In his opening statement during the Forty-third (Special) Session of the ICE Council on 21 May, the Director, recalling the Committee's overall objective to serve its lamber Governments, expressed his intention to collaborate closely with the Latin American Goverments in a joint effort to strengthen and enlarge ICEM's Latin Ameri- can ProgramINOS, To this and he assigned to the position of Chief of the Latin American Department at Headquarters, Mr. Roberto Kozak. former IC Representativo in Chuile, who took up his new position on 1 June. Mr. Kozak is an Argentine national.
