10. From 1 January to 2 July, 1979, 64, 000 Vietnamese refugees reached Hong Kong, of whom about 62% originated from the North. Only 5, 125 refugees have left Hong Kong for re-settlement in other countries during the same period. On 12 July, the total still in Hong Kong was 65,000. Since April there has been a striking increase in the numbers arriving in Hong Kong in small boats, and in the first week of July the majority were from Southern ports.
