Die - Part,

REFUGEES:

RESETTLEMENT

1. A Mr Robert Lane of the General Accounting Office (GAO) telephoned me recently to enquire whether the Embassy could provide any information relating to programmes for the resettlement of refugees in the United Kingdom. As you may know the GAO, although originally established to audit the accounts of the Federal Government now provides assistance for the Congress in the form of reports and studies, and Lane explained that they had been tasked to producing a report on the experiences of other countries resettling refugees. A team from the GAO will shortly be travelling

1 to Western Europe to conduct investigations on the spot. I replied

that we unfortunately had no material on our files dealing with resettlement in the UK, but that Government departments in Whitehall and voluntary agencies would no doubt have a wealth of information derived not only from experience in resettling Indochinese refugees but from experience in resettling large numbers of East African Asians. Lane said that the US Embassy would no doubt be in touch with the FCO in due course with a formal request for assistance with the proposed study.
