IMMIGRATION INTO BRITAIN

The Home Office have provided the following figures which may be useful to set the UK's record over Vietnamese refugees into perspective.

The total number of persons accepted for settlement in the UK in the 10 years 1969-78 was 730,000, or around 70,000 per year (72,000 in 1978). Of these, most were normal immigrants from Commonwealth and other countries, but the following could be counted as refugees:

29,000 Ugandan Asians 1972-3
9,000 Cypriots 1974
3,000 South Americans since 1974
3. It may be worth recording also that up to 19 June the position on Indo-China refugees was that 2,316 had been accepted into this country since 1975. In addition, the following were due to come:
601 ex-Sibonga (343 had already arrived)
293 ex-Roach Bank
57 in Singapore under guarantee
1,230 being the unexpired portion of the 1,500 quota for
Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand: some 900 individuals had been identified to fill places under this quota.
