Refugees from Indo-China

11 UNHCR is doing his best to find solutions to this growing problem. The UK agreed last January to admit a further 1,500 refugees (1,000 from Hong Kong with 250 each from Malaysia and Thailand). HM Ambassador, Jakarta, will represent us at a meeting called by the Indonesians next week to discuss the ASEAN proposal for an islani processing centre (instructions are beng drafted). Our prime interest is the position of Hong Kong, where the current total of boat refugees has reached nearly 25,000.

Appointments

12 Some important UN appointments are under consideration the Commissioner General for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) (the present British No 2- M Alan Brown! is a possible candidate; so is Mr D J McCarthy, a member of the Service); the Executive Director for the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF); and the Rector of the UN University in Tokyo (the Chairman of the nominating committee is visiting the UK in early June).

When he has a spare moment, Mr Hurd may wish to discuss some of these issues with Sir A Parsons, Mr Leahy and the Department.
