Sir A Parsons thought the Minister of State might like to have a round-up of UN issues which will be coming up before the holiday period.
Security Council
The
2 Rhodesia, Namibia/South Africa and Lebanon are current issues on which meetings could be called at short notice. UK will be President of the Council in July. The question of Israeli settlements is already on the agenda for that month, and the mandate of the UN Middle East peacekeeping force (UNEF II)
will be due for renewal.
3 The mandates of the Lebanese and Cyprus peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL and UNFICYP) come up for renewal in June (when the Soviet Union is President). The same month is likely to see a further debate on Namibia, following a debate beginning on 23 May in the resumed General Assembly.

There could be a debate on Rhodes. a by the end of May, since the Council has to take the report of the thodesia' Sanctions Committee.
North/South Dialogue
The previous
5 1. The fifth session of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD V) opened yesterday in Manila. Government had envisaged that the Secretary of State for Trade would attend the opening period and the Minister for Overseas Development the closing stages.
