from chemps in Malaysia and Thailand.

The first groups of

the 1,500 quota have already begun to arrive here.

Over and above that quota, the British Government have made a

commitment to accept for permanent settlement in the United

Kingdom any refugees who are rescued by vessels registered in

the United Kingdom who cannot be resettled elsewhere. As I all

sure you know, there have already been a considerable number

of rescue operations involving British ships and refugees

from Indo-China and these will undoubtedly continue. Apart

from this, we shall continue to accept refugees who have

close ties with this country.

With regard to the limited conference which is planned to be

held in Jakarta at the end of April or early in May, I can

assure your Excellency that the British Government would be

pleased to participate and we shall look forward to receiving

further details.
