1,500 refyes from Indo-China, an official from the Home

Office, together with a representative from the British

Council for Aid to Refugees left for South-East Asia in order

to select this number for resettlement in the United Kingdom.

It was planned to take 1,000 from Hong Kong. However, in

the event only 650 refugees applied for an interview and,of

these, 412 were considered suitable for resettlement here.

The Home Office will be making a further visit to Hong Kong

in the hope of finding more refugees who would be content to

make their home here. But I am sure you will agree it would

be wrong and misguided not to respect the wishes of the

individuals concerned and put undue pressure on them to come

here against their will.
