SWEDEN'S RECEPTION OF 250 BOAT REFUGEES

1. Thank you for sending us a copy of the Swedish Ministry of Labour's press release of 24 January about the admission of 250 Indo-Chinese refugees to Sweden. We should be grateful if you would take an early opportunity, as a follow-up to your earlier representations on the subject, to remind the Swedish government of the growing numbers of refugees in Hong Kong who are awaiting resettlement elsewhere: there are now in excess of (1,500) in this category in Hong Kong. It would be much appreciated by HMG and the Hong Kong Government if the Swedish authorities could sympathetically consider accepting some from among the refugees in Hong Kong.
