NOTES FOR SUPPLEMENTARIES

WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESULT OF YOUR APPROACHES TO GOVERNMENTS TO HELP HONG KONG?

1. These have been generally disappointing, though some

governments are still considering the matter. But we are most

grateful to those countries, particularly the USA, Canada,

Australia and the Federal Republic of Germany, who have agreed to

accept Vietnamese refugees from Hong Kong.

WILL BRITAIN NOT TAKE MORE?

2.

This is a matter primarily for my rt hon Friend the Home

Secretary. I am sure he is not unsympathetic, but there is

clearly a limit to the numbers which can be satisfactorily

absorbed.

PERMANENT SETTLEMENT OF VIETNAMESE REFUGEES IN HONG KONG

3. The Hong Kong Government accept for permanent settlement

anybody who is the spouse, dependent child or elderly parent of ·

somebody who is already a Hong Kong resident. Exceptions can also

be made on humanitarian grounds. Since 1975, 10,500 former

residents of Vietnam have been allowed to settle permanently in

Hong Kong.
